Emergency Dentistry in Thousand Oaks, CA

Emergency dentistry addresses dental emergencies that need immediate treatment to control pain, stop bleeding, avoid infection, or salvage a tooth. Several of these emergencies include severe toothache, avulsed or cracked teeth, displaced teeth, painful swelling or abscess, broken or lost restorations showing sensitive tissue, or traumatic jaw or mouth injury.
At 1000 Smiles Dental Group, 1000 Newbury Road, Thousand Oaks, we appreciate the urgent nature of dental conditions and deliver prompt care. Our professional staff often performs same-day treatment for severe toothache, knocked-out tooth, or other trauma to alleviate pain and protect oral health. The dentist will consider your pain threshold and create an individualized pain-management plan, using local anesthesia, nitrous, or oral sedation, to ensure you are comfortable during emergency treatment.
What to Do Immediately (First-Aid Measures)
- Serious bleeding: Apply firm pressure with sterile gauze. Maintain for 10–15 minutes. For uncontrolled bleeding or facial injury, call 911.
- Knocked-out tooth: Hold the tooth by the crown (not the root). Rinse briefly only if filthy - do not scrub. Keep the tooth wet; insert it back into the socket, if possible, or put it in milk or saliva. Bring the tooth and come in at once. Time is of the essence.
- Broken tooth: Rinse mouth with warm water. Apply a cold compress to reduce swelling. Take any fragments with you.
- Severe toothache: Rinse with warm salt water, take over-the-counter pain reliever as directed unless contraindicated, and call our office. Do not apply aspirin to the gums or teeth.
- Dental infection with swelling or fever: Seek urgent care right away. Swelling affecting breathing or swallowing requires an emergency department visit.
Emergency Dental Services
- Tooth Extractions: When a tooth is cracked or decayed and cannot be fixed, our skilled dentists perform precise extractions to eliminate the pain and infection. We ensure to minimize pain and keep your overall health intact while removing a problematic tooth.
- Cracked or Broken Teeth: Chipped, cracked, or broken teeth and restorations can cause pain and are potentially dangerous. We can quickly repair them temporarily or place provisional crowns to support the tooth and prevent further injury. Once you have calmed down, a permanent restoration can be completed.
- Knocked-Out Teeth (Avulsed Teeth): If a permanent tooth has been knocked out, timing is critical. Gently grasp the tooth by the crown (never hold by the root) and clean it off with milk or saliva. If possible, try to reinsert the tooth. Our team will assist with replanting or salvaging the tooth and then follow up with the necessary treatment to maximize the chances of recovery.
- Protective Mouthguards: We give tailor-made mouthguards to prevent dental trauma, especially for sports enthusiasts and active patients. The appliances can save your teeth while playing sports or even when exercising, preventing emergencies.
- Preventive Care: After treatment of the crisis, we strive to prevent future crises. Regular check-ups, cleaning, and education on preventive practices are all involved. The use of appliances like night guards or athletic mouth guards can effectively reduce the risk of re-injury. Keeping your teeth healthy gives you long-term peace of mind.
Before & Aftercare Instructions (Universal Scenarios)
After extraction or replantation:
- Bite gently on gauze for 30–60 minutes to control bleeding.
- Apply ice to the outside of the cheek every few hours for the first 24 hours to reduce swelling.
- Avoid spitting or aggressive rinsing for 24 hours. Gently rinse with warm salt water after 24 hours.
- Take any pain medicine or antibiotics prescribed as directed.
Smoking, straw, heavy lifting, or heavy exercise is avoided for 48–72 hours.
After the repair of a broken tooth or the placement of a crown:
- Do not chew on the treated side until numbness has disappeared and restoration is settled.
- Expect minimal sensitivity; instruct if pain increases or persists.
- Maintain good oral hygiene, but avoid forced contact with the treated surface.
After soft-tissue repair (lips/tongue):
- Keep the area clean, and rinse with a salt-water solution after 24 hours.
- Avoid hard or sharp objects, and spicy foods.
Advanced Technology & Patient Comfort
1000 Smiles Dental Group utilizes the most advanced technology to deliver swift, accurate emergency care. We use state-of-the-art 3D digital imaging during diagnosis and treatment planning. This type of equipment allows us to identify problems like hidden fractures or infections early on and treat them with precision. For example, 3D X-rays can reveal the extent of damage within a tooth or below the gums, which means more effective treatment and less surprise.
Through emergency visits, we present a calming, non-threatening attitude. Dr. Rubin and his team discuss degrees of pain and have immediate interventions for pain. When patients feel pain, our doctor uses anesthetics and sedatives. For example, we provide nitrous oxide or a medication that allows patients to get comfortable during treatment. Interlocking advanced treatment with personalized comfort will make patients relax, even with emergency care.
